“I was born and raised in an old port town on the northern tip of what used be the Aral Sea in southern Kazakhstan. I went to Nazarbayev University, Kazakhstan’s first corruption-free university fully run in English, and earned a B.A. in History summa cum laude, with double minors in Political Science and Economics in 2016. Although the university enjoyed an unprecedented level of academic freedom, it did not offer courses discussing Kazakhstan’s own political and development challenges. I therefore arrived in Washington, DC, five years ago for my Master’s in Eurasian Studies at Georgetown University. Upon learning the roots of social inequality and pervasive corruption in my region, I decided to focus on private sector-driven approach to development.
I spent the last two years supporting due diligence screening of investment projects in developing countries at the International Finance Corporation. At the same time, I began wondering how to balance the needs of developing countries with the climate change and shrinking natural resources. I want to learn more about sustainability initiatives, such as decarbonization of global supply chains, and have accepted the offer for the Master’s in Business Administration at the University of Washington Michael G. Foster School of Business. I will begin my studies in September 2021 and plan to pursue Entrepreneurship Certificate with focus on sustainable business practices.”
